Steel Fabrication

At Quality Steel, we provide a plethora of steel-related services. We meet your demands, no matter how high they may be, by giving you the exact results you need. Among our services is steel fabrication, a complex process that helps add value to the material that we use during production of machinery. A popular method, it can be used to create loose parts, structural frames of buildings, or even heavy equipment. But what exactly is it and how does it work?

In order for machines and structures to be constructed in a reliable manner, steel fabrication is one of the best ways to go about it. In this process, the structures are built from various raw materials with added value. This makes for a very efficient way of manufacturing equipment, as both money and resources can be conserved, while the finished product leaves nothing to be desired. The process involves cutting, bending, and assembling, all of which are performed in one plant.

Cutting is done by sawing, shearing, or chiselling (through the use of both manual and powered variants), and torching with hand-held torches (such as oxy-fuel torches or plasma torches).

Bending is done by hammering (manual or powered) or via press brakes and similar tools. Modern metal fabricators use press brakes to either coin or air-bend metal sheet into form. CNC-controlled back gauges use hard stops to position cut parts in order to place bend lines in the correct position. Offline programming software now makes programming the CNC-controlled press brakes seamless and very efficient.

Assembling (joining of the pieces) is done by welding, binding with adhesives, riveting, threaded fasteners, or even more bending in the form of a crimped seam. Structural steel and sheet metal are the usual starting materials for fabrication, along with the welding wire, flux, and fasteners that will join the cut pieces. As with other manufacturing processes, both human labour and automation are commonly used. The product resulting from fabrication is referred to as a fabrication as well. Shops that specialize in this type of metal work are called fab shops. The end products of other common types of metalworking, such as machining, metal stamping, forging, and casting, may be similar in shape and function, but those processes are not classified as fabrication.
